“What if imagination and art are not frosting at all, but the fountainhead of human experience? What if our logic and science derive from art forms and are fundamentally dependent on them rather than art being merely a decoration for our work when science and logic have produced it?”
– Rollo May
Real Art at Yogasmith
Yogasmith has been deliberate in our interior design choices for our studios. We use the art of Marshall Carbee to enhance our custom designed, welcoming, meditative yoga studios. Carbee’s inspiring and contemplative work hangs exclusively in all of our yoga studios. Carbee is known for his unique painting methods – his collaboration with nature.
“I usher a geological event on the canvas. It’s the same vocabulary as geology; precipitation, erosion, sedimentation, evaporation, accretion. I make my own paint with earth pigments and seawater or rainwater and then seed the canvas with paint. It’s an art farm. It’s more like farming than painting. Like a farmer, I allow the canvas to self- organize, grow. As in yoga, how we practice to allow nature to express itself through us in that divine way. I allow nature to express herself though my paintings. It’s a practice. The beautiful accidents always happen in a more beautiful way when we take more risks. With exposure to the elements – the natural forces of the rain, wind, sunlight, mist, snow, ice – the canvas transforms into a landscape, a star field, river deltas, the orbits of planets, deserts, the sea. The paintings are perfect for use in meditation. My paintings are nature on canvas.”
